Staircase Painting

Staircase Painting in Toronto & the GTA

Staircases are one of the most challenging interior painting projects in a home — awkward angles, high walls, detailed spindles, and the need to keep the staircase usable during the project all make it a job that requires planning and proper technique. When done well, a freshly painted staircase makes the entire home feel renewed.

Cornerstone Pro Painting handles full staircase painting projects including stair walls, spindles, railings, risers, and stringers. We work with ladders and scaffolding positioned safely, sequence the work so the staircase remains passable throughout, and apply durable finishes specifically chosen for high-contact stair surfaces.

Our Process

01
Scope Definition

We walk through the staircase and confirm exactly what's being painted: walls, spindles, railings, risers, or a combination. Each element gets the right product.

02
Safe Setup

Ladders and scaffolding are positioned safely against stairwell walls. We plan the sequence so the staircase stays usable throughout the project.

03
Spindle & Railing Painting

Spindles are brush-painted individually or spray-finished off-site. Railings receive a durable enamel topcoat that holds up to daily hand contact.

04
Wall Painting

Stairwell walls are painted with extension equipment and ladders. We ensure consistent coverage on long wall runs and cathedral-height stairwells.

Common Questions About
Staircase Painting

Can you paint stair spindles without removing them?

Yes. We brush-paint spindles in place, working carefully around each one. For very high spindle counts, spray finishing after removal may be more efficient — we'll discuss the right approach during the estimate.

What finish should I use on stair railings?

Semi-gloss or gloss enamel for railings — they need to be durable enough to handle constant hand contact and easy to clean.

Can I use the stairs while they're being painted?

We sequence the work so at least one side of the staircase is always passable. Full access is typically restored the same day.

How long does staircase painting take?

A standard straight staircase takes one to two days. A curved staircase, a double staircase, or one with extensive spindle work may take longer.

Do you paint stair treads?

Stair treads can be painted with floor paint or stained and varnished. We'll discuss the right approach based on your tread material and the look you're after.
