What Paint Smell Actually Is
The smell from fresh interior paint is primarily produced by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) — chemical solvents that evaporate off the paint surface as it dries and cures. VOCs are present in virtually all architectural paints, though the levels vary dramatically by product type. Oil-based paints and traditional alkyds have very high VOC levels; waterborne latex paints have much lower levels; zero-VOC and low-VOC formulations are available and have become the standard for professional residential work.
The smell you notice immediately after painting is the initial off-gassing of VOCs as the paint skins over and starts to cure. This is the most intense phase, and it typically lasts 24 to 48 hours with good ventilation. What follows is a lower-level off-gassing that can continue for several weeks as the paint fully cures — this phase is usually undetectable in normal conditions but may be noticeable to sensitive individuals.
Realistic Timelines by Product Type
Low-VOC waterborne latex (what we use on most Toronto interior projects): the acute smell dissipates within 24–48 hours with windows open. Residual off-gassing continues for 2–4 weeks during full cure, but is not typically noticeable to most people after the first day.
Zero-VOC paints: similar timeline, slightly shorter acute phase. Still requires ventilation during application.
Oil-based or alkyd products (used for trim, doors, and specialty surfaces): significantly stronger smell, 2–4 days of acute off-gassing, and residual smell for several weeks. We avoid these for full room applications in occupied homes unless there's a specific performance reason for them.
How to Minimize Smell and VOC Exposure
The most effective tool is ventilation — open windows and run fans to move air through the painted space throughout the painting day and for 24–48 hours afterward. This removes off-gassed VOCs from the indoor air and dramatically reduces both the smell and the concentration of chemicals in the space.
If the weather doesn't permit opening windows (cold Toronto winters), a bathroom exhaust fan run continuously provides some air exchange. Air purifiers with activated carbon filters can help neutralize VOC smell but are not a substitute for ventilation.
Activated charcoal bowls placed in the painted room can absorb residual smell after painting is complete — this is a practical trick that works for the low-level off-gassing phase. Baking soda in open containers does the same, less effectively.
Children, Pets, and Sensitive Individuals
For families with young children, pregnant women, or pets, we always recommend staying out of freshly painted spaces for at least 24 hours after painting with low-VOC products, and 48–72 hours with higher-VOC products like oil-based trim paint. The concentration of VOCs immediately after application is the highest it will be throughout the project.
