What Makes Dark Colours Work
Dark colours create a sense of enclosure and intimacy that lighter colours can't replicate. In the right room — one with good ambient and accent lighting, with furniture and materials that contrast or complement the wall colour, with enough volume that the space doesn't feel compressed — a deep colour on the walls is genuinely beautiful. The key phrase is 'the right room.'
Dark colours tend to work best in rooms that are used in the evening — home offices, media rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms. These spaces are lit artificially most of the time they're occupied, which means you control how the colour is activated by the lighting choices. Natural light is harder to control, which is why dark colours in a kitchen or main living area need very careful consideration.
The Natural Light Question
A dark room with one small north-facing window will feel very different at noon than it does at 8pm. During the day, without artificial lighting, a dark colour in a low-light room can feel oppressive rather than dramatic. Before committing to a deep colour on a wall, spend a full day in the room noting how the light quality changes — and specifically how the wall will look at 10am on a grey November day when natural light is at its weakest.
If the room has strong south or west exposure, dark colours can work beautifully in natural light — the colour activates against the warm afternoon light in a way that's hard to achieve artificially. But the same dark colour in a north-facing room with limited windows is a very different proposition.
The Practical Challenges of Dark Paint
Dark colours are technically more demanding to apply than lighter colours. They require more coats to achieve full, even coverage — typically three coats for saturated darks over a different base colour, compared to two for most light-to-medium transitions. They show every roller mark and application inconsistency more clearly than lighter colours do. And they make touch-up repairs significantly harder — matching a deep colour with touch-up paint from a different batch, applied over a different surface condition, almost never results in a perfect match.
This is one of the strongest arguments for professional application on dark colours. The number of coats, the quality of the rolling technique, and the precision of the cut-in lines all matter more in a dark room than in a light one. The margin for error is smaller.
Dark Colours and Resale
I am sometimes asked whether dark colours hurt resale value. The honest answer is: it depends. A beautifully executed deep navy or charcoal in the right room, photographed well, reads as sophisticated and intentional in a listing. A poorly applied dark colour in the wrong room reads as a project the next buyer needs to undo. When a dark colour is applied with quality and care, it is an asset. When it's applied carelessly, it's a liability.
If you're painting to sell in the next 12-18 months, I'd generally recommend lighter, neutral choices for broad-market appeal. If you're painting to live in, choose the colour you love and have it done properly.
